Trained therapists and volunteers help these children take their first steps towards healing from the grief.
“Children with grief don’t always have the words that adults have,” explained Dee Flood, community development manager for Methodist Hospice. “We try to help them put their feelings into motion through play.”
Activities such as games, creating memory boxes with special mementos, climbing the rock wall to face their grief, and writing words of anger on rocks and throwing them into the lake to get rid of those feelings all help children explore their thoughts and feelings.
“The high schoolers love to throw eggs at a blank canvas to create their own piece of art to get that anger out,” said Flood.
Another important component to Camp BraveHearts is the work that counselors provide the parents and caregivers. By helping them heal from their grief, parents and caregivers are better equipped to give the support and comfort to those children who are trying to deal with their loss and all the emotions that come with losing a loved one.
