Perioperative Nurse Program

Expand your career options through the Perioperative Fellowship Program, the only program of its kind in Memphis. No other hospital in the city offers a formal perioperative class for nurses to gain valuable surgical skills through hands-on education.

Designed for graduate and registered nurses with no previous surgical work experience, the program trains them to function as novice nurses in the perioperative setting. The program will provide GNs and RNs with the tools needed to work in the operating room as a circulator.

The program is open to all Methodist Healthcare nurses and will equip the nurse with:

  • The ability to understand what is happening in the surgery suite
  • The knowledge of what specialty equipment is needed to perform a surgical case,
  • The basic knowledge of sterile techniques, suture, wound assessment, surgical positioning, surgical prep and draping and
  • Minimum competence of the surgical scrub.

For six months, nurses receive full-time didactic and clinical training. Classes start in January and June of each year and class size is limited.
