Methodist South Diabetes Clinic Provides Needed Support to Diabetics

Methodist South Hospital recently started a free diabetes support clinic to help people manage their diabetes. The program provides glucose checks, blood pressure checks, weight monitoring, nutrition counseling, education, resource referrals, support and consultations. The program was started due to the high volume of diabetic patients that were being seen in the hospital.
Annette Caple, RN, Methodist South diabetes support clinic coordinator and educator, volunteered to start the program to help patients become better educated on how to control and manage their conditions. Diabetes describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both.
“Every week we have guest speakers discuss different topics of interest,” said Annette. “Pharmacists, dietitians and nurse practitioners have all been involved in the program.”
Program attendee Donald Dodson first heard of the clinic through his uncle who works in Security at Methodist South. He was diagnosed with diabetes 16 years ago when he noticed classic symptoms of dizziness, weakness and extreme thirst.
“I would highly recommend this program,” said Donald. “I have been to other support clinics, but I have learned more here because the classes are smaller and more personable.”
Donald said the nutrition counseling and medicine dosages have been the most helpful topics for him. Since starting the program he has improved his eating habits and he is exercising more.
The program is open to anyone who can attend the classes which are held every Friday from noon – 1 p.m. in the hospital’s Outlook Room located on the basement level at Methodist South.
