Methodist Adds to Quality Scores on Web Site

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare began posting quality indicators for its adult hospitals and for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in July and is now adding more data to its adult Web site, as well as how the adult hospitals are faring with the national Leapfrog survey standards.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey is a national, evidence-based survey of hospital safety, quality and efficiency.

“The Leapfrog Group works on behalf of the millions of Americans for whom many of the nation's largest corporations and public agencies buy health benefits,” said Cristie Upshaw Travis, chief executive officer of the Memphis Business Group on Health. Memphis Business Group on Health is the official Leapfrog Regional Roll-Out for Memphis, north Mississippi and west Tennessee and Travis is a former Chair of The Leapfrog Group Board of Directors.

“We applaud Methodist for its initiatives to improve the quality and transparency of health care so that consumers and purchasing organizations can make informed choices,” she said. “Consumers ultimately reap the benefits.”

Methodist also added quality indicators related to hand hygiene, ventilator-acquired pneumonia, and central line associated blood stream infection.

These indicators allow consumers to compare Methodist and Le Bonheur data to State and national benchmarks. Information already on the Methodist quality Web site allows the public to see how the hospitals rank in heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and certain types of surgeries. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital quality data includes asthma care, central line infection, hand hygiene, ventilator acquired pneumonia, surgical site infection, medical response team volume, 7-day readmissions and normal body temperature.

In many cases, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare hospitals rank above state and national averages and are achieving or approaching the top performers in the country.

“Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare believes in transparency and open, honest communication about quality to allow consumers to make informed healthcare decisions,” said Jerry Maliot, M.D., Chief Quality Officer.

“Methodist Le Bonheur was the first healthcare system in the Memphis market to post easy-to-understand aggregated quality data, allowing consumers to get a wide variety of information without having to go to other Web sites,” said Maliot. “And now we are the first hospital to post Leapfrog measures. We know how hard it can be for consumers to navigate quality information on various web sites that may not be presented in a consumer-friendly format.

The site also provides some context and information to help individuals understand what these clinical quality indicators mean and why they are important. The sites will continue adding data to help consumers better understand the quality of care provided at Methodist Le Bonheur facilities.

“Our goal is to provide the public with accurate information about the care we provide and to keep our hospitals, doctors, and nurses accountable to our patients,” said Dr. Maliot.

The Quality Report indicators were developed by a number of sources including The Leapfrog Group, Hospital Compare, The Joint Commission and others.
